Harka is a veteran mountain biker and an entrepreneur in the tourism sector. He was born on the 24th of November, 1975 in Lisankhu – Sindhupalchowk, Nepal and currently lives in Swayambhu, Kathmandu.
He came to Kathmandu after attempting 10th grade from his village in 1993 AD in pursuit of a job and career. It all started from learning bicycling when there was a vacancy for delivery boys with experience of cycling. He started cycling as a necessity for job.
He got connected with the cycle since then and with that growing attachment he also traveled 120 km, way to his home from Kathmandu on a normal gear system bike. It was a very new thing at the time.
After 2 years of the same work he got attracted to the trekking field which was from the very initial phase for him as he started with porter.
In his starting, he carried 45 Kg of loads for 32 days continuously in remote areas. It was not an easy day but he kept learning and experiencing new things.
He started to learn English language, communication skills, networking skills and all what he felt necessary to boost his life.
The insurgency period was not good at the tourism sector so too his life as well.
With the responsibility of family and livelihood he started different jobs whatever he got.
He became a wage labor, taxi driver, security guard and so on. It was too difficult for him to survive but he never lost his hope.
Gradually when the country moved towards the peace process, he again joined the trekking sector.
But this time he began from more than zero. He became logistic crew, kitchen crew, and guide and later he had his own travel agency in 2015 AD.
His hardship took him from a worker to a company owner.
During the period of trekking, he had been associated with cycling but not as previous one; it was a mountain bike made for rough terrain and tour ride.
He became a mountain bike guide during his early career where he got the opportunity to ride with national and international professional riders as well.
He used to practice mountain biking with the national players and it became his passion to ride mountain bikes. In 2012, he bought a mountain bike which was more expensive than a motorbike. He had to add more money even after selling his motorbike.
After usual practice, he started into professional racing in 2016 from the National cycling game at Dharan. He had participated in Masters Category where he got 4th position.
It was a totally different experience for him as the race was not just paddling but also techniques.
Then he practiced even harder and became National Champion in the Master's category of Cross Country Mountain Biking in 2019.
At the same time he kept participating in high altitude international races like Yak Attack and Pokhara IV, where he was always a medal holder.
He was in 2nd position in 2017 Yak Attack while following 2 years gold medalist in Men's master's category in 2018 and 2019.
Similarly he had participated in international races in India, Bhutan and Germany where he had very good performances.
The Maxxis Bike Transalp race in Austria was an amazing experience for him as it was a 7 Day long international race starting from Austria to Italy and was much expensive for participants as well but he had got full sponsorship along with his team from Nepal.
In Feb. 2020 Feb, he was diagnosed with cancer in his urinary bladder. It was Covid-19 pandemic that had hit the tourism business hard and cancer had added a combo effect to his life.
But again he didn't lose his hope and control so his patience as well as treatment at the right time took him to the safe zone. He got an operation and followed treatment. He does not have severe cancer right now.
Though he is still on his routine checkup for cancer, he resumed mountain biking. And started racing competitively again back in 2022, won Rasuwa High Altitude MTB Challenge and secured a place in podium (2nd Place) at Yak Attack 2022.
He even won the 18th National XCO MTB Challenge held on 25 June, 2023 and High Altitude Mountain Bike Challenge, Yak Attack 2023 (Annapurna Circuit Route).
Now, Harka wants to share his experiences of High Altitude Mountain biking via MTB Tours in higher altitudes of Nepal and has initiated a company called “Altitude Challenge” which is in the setup phase. He had to leave the previous company which he had co-founded in 2015 due to personal reasons and handed it over to his partner.
He again cherishes his life and his struggles in which the mountain bike has always been his supportive part.
Cycle took his journey from a remote village of Nepal to the top cities of the World.
He had amazing experiences, opportunities, achievements and attachment with bicycles, especially with mountain bikes. He further wishes to continue his life in mountain biking and its development as much as he can.
